Raffia Hat Making

Never buy another hat. This class will teach you how to handmake a lifetime of gorgeous, graceful raffia hats.

With over 30 years of raffia weaving and teaching under her belt, Charlotte will turn making your own raffia hat into a breeze. Across four hours (with a biscuit break!) she will offer in depth instructions on how to create two different hat styles of two different sizes. This will in turn open the door to hundreds of further design options. Your hat making introduction will cover crafting and stitching together a continuous plait of 10 metres. In accessory, as you plait and sew raw, loose raffia into an elegant, finished hat, Charlotte will share her wisdom regarding:

-How to colour raffia

-Hat blocks and sizing

-Hat Steaming

-How to create different styles of hat brims (such as raffia trim along the brim!)

Learn about your medium, as Charlotte shares where raffia is grown around the world and how to recognise it in its highest quality.

With a maximum of 10 student, this class will allow for plenty of professional one-on-one millinery tuition. Not only will you bring home your own uniquely handmade hat – you will also bring home the wisdom to create many more hats, of your favourite styles and colours!
