The course will have participants learning to create their own macramé hangers using waxed cotton cord and recycled glass jars. Two knots, and a braiding technique will be taught and students will leave with their own handmade macramé hanger, and the skills to create more and experiment with other outcomes.

Participants who wish to experiment with beads or other decorations in their hangers may bring their own.

About Kirri-maDe

My name is Kirri-Mae and I design, make and sell things. I retail, wholesale and take on commission work, collaborations and other creative projects. So far my work has included home-wares, jewellery and full-scale garment work. It’s really varied, but currently I’m working with resin and macramé. They are two very different approaches to making, and they’ve allowed me to develop varied skills and explore a really wide range of potential outcomes.

kirri-maDe is my label and it allows me to remain creative while also pursuing academic and professional endeavours. The products are all handmade, by myself, here in Melbourne. Ethics and sustainability in practice are important to me so I make efforts to minimise waste, and utilise reclaimed items in my work where possible. This is where the macramé hangers began, as I noticed the abundance of glass jars that were heading to the recycling bin from my kitchen on a weekly basis. Small glass jars offer a great resource for planting moss and succulents, holding tealight candles, or using as a vase, and the macramé allows these to be featured and a really sweet and decorative package.
