Craftivism is the practice of engaged creativity, especially regarding political or social causes. By using their creative energy to help make the world a better place, craftivists help bring about positive change via personalized activism. Craftivism allows practitioners to customize their particular skills to address particular causes. – Betsy Greer

In this workshop we’ll look at the growing worldwide craftivism movement, focusing on various projects that employed different types of crafts to spread their message. From anti-war cross stitch protests to personalizing your urban environment via sneaky guerrilla knitting, from raising awareness about the gender pay gap through baking to guerrilla mosaics protesting the death penalty in the US, craft can and has been utalised for almost every cause.

This workshop will explore the various ways people have used their chosen craft to spread their message and how you can promote causes you believe in through your favourite craft. You’ll be guided through designing and making your own small craftivist cross stitch on a cause of your choice.

If you can read a map or play Battleships you can cross stitch, and if you have a cause you’re passionate about, you can be a craftivist!
