Use art as a tool for social change, and lets change our world for good!

Mahmoud Salameh is a Syrian/Palestinian cartoonist, TV animator, film-maker & art activist whose refugee-related cartoons have been used by the Guardian, and who has worked closely in support of Behrouz Boochani, journalist, and ‘Eaten Fish’, fellow cartoonist, both of whom are currently refugees detained on Manus Island. As a refugee himself, Mahmoud also spent 17 months in Australian immigration detention.

Mahmoud’s work focuses on themes of human rights issues, the refugee experience, the war in his home country, Syria and the struggles of the country of his family, Palestine.  Through techniques used by journalists and activists around the world, we’ll be learning how to take a big idea or complex issue and turn it into a hard-hitting drawn image that will get your message across. Mahmoud will lead an exploration into basic cartooning techniques and activism, such as drawing basic characters and workshopping ideas, teaching the class to convey a message or big idea through an art.

He will also share his experiences as an activist & cartoonist both in Syria and now in Australia. Bring with you a concept/story/issue that you are passionate about – whether it is something political, a human rights issue, a family story, or that your community veggie patch is continually raided by an unknown suspect, and learn to convey this issue through art, simply & with impact.

*This class is part of a new workshop series ‘Art From The World,’ an initiative led by Work-Shop and Welcome Studio.

Mahmoud Salameh is a Welcome Studio artist, an art-based social enterprise partnering with people seeking asylum to create positive social change and spread a message of ‘welcome’. Welcome Studio artists are from refugee backgrounds or are currently seeking asylum in Australia. They bring and share art and craft skills from their own cultures and experiences that enrich our Australian culture and society. Profits from these workshops will fund community projects and art workshops with Sydney’s refugee community. Find more on Welcome Studio at www.welcomestudio.com.au
