In this 2 hour workshop with Melbourne artist Joshua Thomas, you’ll be introduced to the history of American Traditional Tattoo Flash; learning about the key imagery, symbolism and meaning of the imagery, and the importance of elements such as bold colour and strong line-work in creating a great traditional flash design.

You’ll be introduced to the process of sketching, retracing and refining a basic flash design, before moving on to simple shading/ blending techniques with coloured pencil using the traditional 5 colour pallet.

Once you’ve fine-tuned your skills, you’ll be given time to work on a completed artwork (using your own design or one of the flash designs provided) to take home with you, or maybe even get it as your next tattoo!

ABOUT WALL TO WALL FESTIVAL

What evolved from a small group of people with a big idea has become one of the most innovative community development programs in Victoria. Led by the Juddy Roller creative management team, in collaboration with The Benalla Street Art Committee, Wall to Wall Festival’s unique approach to regional arts and regional development has proven to be a revolutionary approach to building stronger and more diverse communities.

Wall to Wall festival accessibility offers a range of meaningful ways for large segments of the community to get “hands on” and participate in the event.  Demographics at this years Wall to Wall Festival ranged from children as young as 5 years old, working with our professional artists to create an oversized “paint by numbers” mural, through to people up to 90 years old taking part in the guided street art tours and artist talks.

Wall to Wall’s management team is committed to community engagement and participation as a tool for increasing community pride and cultural capital in Benalla and the surrounding district. Wall to Wall Festival’s community engagement programs have been hugely successful, with hundreds of people participating in various events and production elements of the program, as well as thousands attending the festival and enjoying it at their own leisure. Due to the relatively small geographical size of Benalla, the festival creates an all encompassing ambience in the town that has never before existed, helping to enrich community. An entire tour of the 28 murals can be taken in approximately 1 hour, making it one of the most densely populated outdoor street art “galleries” in Australia, even when compared to street art “capitals” such as Fitzroy and Collingwood.

Our commitment to gender parity and educational programs enhances the experience and empowerment felt by the people of Benalla, and also creates long lasting, tangible effects on the long term social and cultural values of the community.
